In AI search, a page can rank well and still never be cited. A competitor with thinner traffic but tighter topical authority can dominate every AI response in your category. The Prompt Is the New Keyword

Keyword research was designed for a world where users type short queries and scan a list of blue links. AI search does not work like that. Users ask full questions, describe situations, and request comparisons. The outputs they receive are synthesised answers, not ranked lists. That means the unit of analysis has to change.

Prompt discovery - identifying the specific questions and conversational queries that trigger AI-generated answers in your category - is now a core research activity. It is not the same as keyword research. You are looking for the prompts that are likely to produce responses where your brand could, or should, appear. Think: 'What is the best alternative to X for small businesses?', 'Which tools do professionals use for Y?', or 'How do I solve Z without a large budget?' These are the entry points into AI responses.

Once you have a prompt set, you can begin testing systematically. Run those prompts through Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini. Record what comes back. Track which sources are cited. Look for patterns in which content formats, domains, and authorities are appearing repeatedly. This is the foundation of any credible AI visibility monitoring programme.

Building a Repeatable Monitoring Workflow

The challenge with AI visibility measurement is consistency. AI responses vary by platform, by user phrasing, and sometimes by session. That means a single test is anecdotal. A structured, repeatable workflow is what turns individual observations into actionable data.

A practical approach involves selecting a defined prompt set - typically 20 to 50 prompts per topic cluster - and running them at regular intervals across your target AI platforms. For each response, you record whether your brand is cited, which sources are referenced, and what claims or framings the AI uses. Over time, this creates a visibility trend you can actually report on and optimise against.

Content Gaps Look Different in AI Search

The distinction matters because AI models synthesise information rather than simply indexing it. When you audit your content against your prompt set, you are looking for three things: presence (is your brand cited at all?), framing (how is your brand described when it is cited?), and gaps (which prompts return responses that entirely exclude your brand?). Each of those requires a different response. Presence issues are often a content authority problem. Framing issues are often a messaging or entity consistency problem. Gaps are opportunities for new content creation. Tracking these three dimensions over time is what makes this a measurement workflow rather than a one-off audit.

The Connection Between AI Visibility and Paid Search

AI visibility work does not sit in isolation from paid search. If your brand is absent from AI-generated answers for high-intent prompts, you are likely also losing upper-funnel brand familiarity that paid campaigns rely on to convert. Performance Max campaigns, for example, lean heavily on audience signals and brand recognition. A brand that is invisible in organic AI responses is working harder and paying more to establish credibility through paid alone.

There is also a practical data angle here. The prompts you identify through AI visibility research are a direct window into how your audience frames problems and describes solutions. That language belongs in your ad copy, your asset groups, and your audience signals. Prompt discovery is, in effect, voice-of-customer research at scale - and it feeds directly into better paid search performance.

What Good AI Visibility Reporting Looks Like

Most marketing teams do not yet have a defined way to report on AI visibility to stakeholders. That is partly a tooling problem and partly a framing problem. The metrics that matter are citation rate (what percentage of your tracked prompts return a response that includes your brand?), share of voice across platforms, and the quality of framing when you are cited. Reporting these figures week-on-week or month-on-month is what gives stakeholders something concrete to assess progress against.

For UK businesses in particular, it is worth building out prompt sets that reflect local search behaviour - queries that include location context, UK-specific terminology, and industry-specific language that may differ from US-centric content. AI models trained predominantly on English-language content can reflect US-centric defaults unless your content explicitly establishes local relevance and authority.

The teams that will pull ahead in AI search are not the ones that wait for standardised measurement to emerge. They are the ones building systematic, repeatable workflows now - testing prompts, auditing responses, updating content, and iterating. That cycle, run consistently, is what AI visibility optimisation actually looks like in practice.
